Canterbury Bulldogs’ coach Cameron Ciraldo dismissed suggestions that halfback Lachlan Galvin is out of position following the team’s 32-12 defeat to the Brisbane Broncos. Despite facing a Broncos side missing 12 players, the Bulldogs were unable to compete effectively, trailing by over 20 points before the game concluded.
The Bulldogs also face injury concerns, with Viliame Kikau likely sidelined due to a suspected pectoral injury, while Matt Burton’s availability is uncertain after being reported for a dangerous tackle on Kotoni Staggs. During the post-match conference, the focus shifted to Galvin’s performance, raising questions about whether he is best suited for the five-eighth position instead of halfback. Ciraldo defended Galvin, highlighting that at just 20 years old, the young player has room to improve. He pointed out that Galvin had previously performed well against top competitors, referencing his standout display in the Bulldogs’ earlier victory over the undefeated Penrith Panthers.
The Bulldogs have struggled defensively, conceding an average of 23.7 points per match this season compared to 17 points per game last year. Ciraldo expressed disappointment in the team’s defensive play, particularly in crucial moments, noting that lapses by one or two players can be detrimental against skilled opponents like Adam Reynolds and Kotoni Staggs. He acknowledged the need for the players to start the game with high energy, especially given the tight turnaround, but lamented missed opportunities on the field.
Ciraldo also mentioned that they must remain vigilant about Galvin’s status after he sustained an ankle injury during the match. Looking ahead, the Bulldogs are eager to avoid a third consecutive loss when they take on the North Queensland Cowboys at Homebush this Friday night.
