Prominent journalist Georgie Gardner marked the end of her tenure with Nine News during her final broadcast, expressing her gratitude to viewers through a heartfelt message. She revealed that since announcing her departure, she has been deeply moved by the flood of kind messages from the audience, which she described as especially meaningful in these challenging times.
In her sign-off, Gardner reflected on the privilege of bringing news to viewers for nearly 25 years. She presented a three-minute retrospective that summarised her extensive career at Nine, playfully noting her changing hairstyles throughout the years. Despite the emotional weight of her farewell, she appreciated the joy and fun she experienced while reporting the news.
After beginning her media journey as a radio cadet at 2NX in Newcastle in 1992, Gardner transitioned to Sydney’s 2Day FM in 1994 as a newsreader. Over the years, she served various roles in television news, ultimately joining Nine in July 2002. There, she began presenting the 6pm weekday weather alongside Brian Henderson and later transitioned to news reading. Gardner joined the Today Show as newsreader in 2007 and returned to the role of host in 2018.
For 17 years, she anchored 9News Sydney’s weekend bulletin, earning respect for her commitment to accuracy, impartiality, and being a trustworthy presence in viewers’ homes. In her farewell, she acknowledged the importance of her role and the trust placed in her by the audience, emphasising her dedication to delivering news sincerely and respectfully.
As she signed off for the last time, Gardner expressed her feelings about her departure, saying she will greatly miss her viewers but is thankful for the incredible journey she has had at Nine News.
