Australia’s south-east is gearing up for a notably cold weekend, with a cold front expected to bring temperatures near or below freezing. Reports from Weatherzone suggest that this particularly chilly weekend is likely to feature the coldest nights of the year so far, with Thredbo in New South Wales forecasted to drop to -5 degrees.
In Victoria, alpine regions could experience temperatures as low as -3 degrees, while Melbourne may see temperatures falling to around 5 degrees on Saturday morning. Tasmania’s Liawanee area on the Central Plateau is expected to record -4 degrees by Sunday morning.
Meteorologist Angus Hines from the Bureau of Meteorology has indicated that for many areas, this will mark the first significant cold mornings of the year. He attributes this cold snap to a combination of high pressure settled over the south-east, clear skies, and minimal wind, all contributing to the colder temperatures expected over the coming days.
In Canberra, temperatures are also predicted to drop below freezing, possibly reaching -1 degree early Sunday. The chill is anticipated to move into the Northern Tablelands, affecting regions such as Guyra and Glen Innes by Monday.
Despite the cold, residents can look forward to clear, sunny days. Hines noted that although daytime temperatures will be bright and sunny, they will be considerably lower than what has been typical throughout the week.
As the south-east prepares for this wintry weather, locals are reminded to stay warm and be cautious of the colder conditions.
