A senior member of Congress has suggested the establishment of a commission to evaluate whether former President Donald Trump is fit to continue in office, invoking the 25th Amendment. This amendment empowers Congress to remove a president who is deemed unfit for duty.

The proposed commission, while applicable to future presidents as well, has been motivated by concerns specifically regarding Trump’s conduct. Representative Jamie Raskin noted that public confidence in Trump’s ability to perform presidential duties has significantly declined, citing troubling actions such as inflammatory remarks about global leaders, including the Pope, and boasting about online depictions of himself that liken him to Jesus Christ. Raskin emphasised the urgent need for action, stating that it is a matter of national security to protect citizens from an increasingly erratic leader.

The envisioned bipartisan commission would comprise eight former high-ranking officials, including past presidents and cabinet members, selected from both political parties. Additionally, party leaders would appoint four doctors and four psychiatrists to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the president’s mental fitness. The commission would further choose a 17th member among themselves and could activate the 25th Amendment with the vice president’s consent.

Despite the ambition behind this legislation, it faces challenges in becoming law due to the Democratic minority status in Congress. Nonetheless, it has garnered support from fifty Democratic co-sponsors. Concurrently, notable conservatives have begun to publicly express concerns about Trump’s mental state, with former press secretary Stephanie Grisham and ex-lawyer Ty Cobb openly questioning his stability.

Raskin has recently called on the White House doctor to conduct a dementia screening for Trump, requesting that the results be made available to Congress. This follows a wave of scrutiny surrounding Trump’s behavior during his second term, which has included bizarre commentary such as unverified interactions with a Sharpie manufacturing CEO and fantastical tales about historical events that never occurred.

The 25th Amendment has never been utilised to permanently remove a sitting president, making this proposed action unprecedented. As discussions about the 25th Amendment progress, Trump’s increasingly erratic behaviour continues to dominate the conversation in American media.
