A prominent Congressional member has suggested establishing a specialised commission tasked with evaluating Donald Trump’s competency to remain in the presidency. This commission would consider whether to invoke the 25th Amendment, which permits the removal of a president deemed unfit for office.

While the proposed commission would apply to any future presidents, the legislation is primarily motivated by concerns regarding Trump’s behaviour. Representative Jamie Raskin, a leading Democrat and vocal critic of Trump, highlighted a significant decline in public confidence in Trump’s capability, citing alarming actions that threaten global stability and his controversial public statements.

Raskin asserted that the current situation poses a potential risk to national security, necessitating Congress to act under the 25th Amendment to safeguard the American populace from an increasingly uncertain environment. The bipartisan commission, consisting of eight retired politicians—including former presidents and cabinet members—would be appointed by leaders from both parties, alongside four medical professionals and four psychiatrists.

The commission would have the authority to select an additional member and, with the vice president’s consent, determine whether the 25th Amendment should be activated. Despite the gravity of this proposal, its chances of passing are slim due to the Democratic minority in Congress, although around fifty Democrats have co-sponsored the initiative.

Recently, several high-profile conservatives have expressed growing concern regarding Trump’s mental state. Former press secretary Stephanie Grisham and Trump’s ex-lawyer, Ty Cobb, have both referred to troubling indicators in Trump’s behaviour, suggesting he may be unwell. Raskin has further pressed for an evaluation of Trump’s cognitive fitness, requesting a comprehensive dementia test with results to be disclosed to Congress.

Examples of Trump’s erratic conduct have sparked media discussions, including outlandish claims and bizarre anecdotes during public appearances. Observers noted his peculiar conversation about Sharpie pens, fabricated discussions during holiday events, and fictitious accounts from his past.

Historically, the 25th Amendment has never been used to permanently oust a sitting president. As discussions around Trump’s behaviour continue to dominate American media, the proposed commission aims to address critical issues surrounding the president’s fitness for duty in a climate where political tension is palpable.
