In a recent telephone interview with the Italian publication Corriere della Sera, US President Donald Trump expressed his belief that Pope Leo XIV lacks comprehension of the dangers posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump stated, “He doesn’t understand and shouldn’t be talking about war, because he has no idea what’s happening.” His remarks were triggered by the Pope’s comments regarding international conflict.

Trump took issue with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who labelled his criticisms of the Pope as "unacceptable." In response, he accused Meloni of being "unacceptable" for ignoring the threat Iran poses, suggesting that Tehran could target Italy with nuclear weapons “in two minutes” if given the opportunity. Despite previously praising Meloni, Trump claimed to be "shocked" by her stance and expressed disappointment, arguing that Italy should support the US in its strategies regarding Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

In her defence, Meloni stood by her disagreements with Trump’s administration, asserting that expressing differing opinions among allies is crucial. “When you’re friends and have allies, especially if they’re strategic, you also have to have the courage to say when you disagree,” she remarked, highlighting the importance of honest dialogue for the benefit of Europe and the West.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also backed Meloni, defending her comments about the Pope by asserting her assertiveness and alignment with the sentiments of the Italian public. Tajani noted that while Trump had previously regarded her as courageous, her remarks reflected the views of many Italians on the matter.

The exchange underscores the tension between differing political perspectives regarding international relations, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear threat and the role of religious leaders in geopolitical discussions.
