Zac Lomax made a notable Super Rugby debut for the Western Force, even though his team suffered a close 24-22 defeat to the Drua in Fiji. This marked Lomax’s first professional match since September, following a tumultuous off-season which included his switch from NRL to rugby union. Despite not scoring points, his performance caught the eye of former Wallaby Morgan Turinui, who believes Lomax has the potential to join the Wallabies squad later this year.

Lomax came off the bench during the 60th minute and showcased his skills by executing a linebreak from a turnover and successfully catching a high ball from Kurtley Beale. Turinui praised Lomax’s awareness at the breakdown, particularly highlighting a moment in the 61st minute where he demonstrated impressive technique and positioning: “That reaction… that’s the best thing he did,” Turinui commented, noting the importance of Lomax’s decision-making in maintaining a strong ruck presence.

Transitioning to rugby union after a decade-long absence posed challenges for Lomax, especially regarding ruck play—a struggle former NRL convert Suliasi Vunivalu also faced. Nevertheless, Lomax displayed good instincts that impressed commentators and fans alike. His former Test teammate, Matt Burke, echoed Turinui’s sentiments, expressing eagerness to see Lomax’s performance against the formidable Crusaders in Perth.

Force coach Simon Cron explained that Lomax was initially meant to enter the game sooner but was delayed due to a gastro outbreak affecting other team members. Cron regretted missing opportunities to maximise Lomax’s involvement, saying, “He didn’t get much opportunity today…so he’ll be disappointed he didn’t get a lot of ball.” Nevertheless, Cron remains optimistic about Lomax’s progression, emphasising the need for the team to integrate him more effectively moving forward.

As Lomax prepares for his next match, fans and analysts alike are keen to see how he will adapt and grow in the upcoming Super Rugby fixtures. His debut performance indicates promise, and as he gains experience, the potential for him to play a crucial role in the Force’s campaign and possibly for the national team remains an exciting prospect.
