Booking.com, a leading global travel platform with over 28 million accommodation listings, has alerted its Australian customers of a potential data breach. The company informed clients via email that their personal information, including booking details and names, may have been accessed by an “unauthorised third party.”

In correspondence sent out on the morning of the breach alert, Booking.com referred to “suspicious activity” that affected several reservations. They reported taking swift action to contain the threat, though specifics regarding the number of impacted individuals were not disclosed. Importantly, the company confirmed that financial data remained secure and was not compromised during the incident.

The information potentially accessed could encompass various personal details associated with reservations, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, and any other information shared with the accommodation providers.

In light of the breach, Booking.com has issued new PINs and reservation numbers to affected customers, reaffirming that the security of their personal data is a top priority. The company committed to enhancing its security measures to safeguard reservations further.

Customers are advised to adopt additional security practices, like installing antivirus software and exercising caution when interacting with links sent by Booking.com or their accommodation.

Booking.com has been approached for further comment as they continue to investigate the situation.
