Olympic silver medallist Jess Hull is set to compete in the women’s 5000 metres final at the Australian Athletics Championships despite suffering from whiplash, grazes, and bruises. Hull experienced a significant fall during the chaotic 1500m final at Sydney Olympic Park on Friday, leading to a disqualification and subsequent reinstatement of fellow athlete, Claudia Hollingsworth.

In contrast, a much-anticipated rematch between rising star Gout Gout and sprint sensation Lachlan Kennedy in the men’s 200m will not occur, as Kennedy has withdrawn following his victory in the 100m. Earlier on Sunday, Hull undertook a short jog and, having assessed her condition, decided to take part in the 5000m race against formidable competitors like Rose Davies, Georgia Griffith, Lauren Ryan, and Linden Hall. Hull plans to have an MRI on her neck in the next few days due to the injuries sustained in her fall.

Hollingsworth, reflecting on the incident, expressed no hard feelings towards Hull and highlighted the sportsmanship shared among the athletes. After clinching the 1500m title, she and Hull shared a moment, embracing and acknowledging the competitive yet respectful nature of their rivalry.

Kennedy, who has been a standout performer, recorded another impressive time of 9.96 seconds to secure the 100m title but opted out of the 200m event to avoid exacerbating a previous injury sustained last year, which led to a stress fracture in his back. His team prioritises his recovery as they look ahead to the upcoming world relay championships in Botswana next month.

The men’s 200m final, still expected to showcase Gout’s prowess, is set for 1.55pm, offering a thrilling conclusion to the championships.
