Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a grade two hamstring strain in his left leg, as confirmed by the team. Doncic, the leading scorer in the NBA, has been pivotal in the Lakers’ impressive rise to third in the Western Conference. Tragically, he sustained the injury during a heavy defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Lakers, with a current record of 50-27 and champions of the Pacific Division, have only five games left before the playoffs commence. Doncic’s injury is particularly significant given his outstanding performance throughout the season, including an average of 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game. His contributions recently earned him the Western Conference Player of the Month award for March, where he scored a remarkable 600 points and had a streak of 13 consecutive games with at least 30 points.

While Doncic is almost certain to secure his second scoring title, he faces the possibility of not qualifying for major end-of-season awards, having played only 64 games. This falls short of the 65-game requirement, mainly due to his previous hamstring issues and other personal commitments including the birth of his second child in Slovenia. Notably, he also received a suspension for accumulating 16 technical fouls earlier in the season.

Doncic’s injury occurred during the first half against the Thunder, where he tried to return but lasted only a few minutes. His absence now raises concerns for the Lakers, who are closely contended by the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves. The final game of the regular season is set for April 13 against the Utah Jazz, followed by the anticipated start of their playoff campaign the weekend after.

Despite his accolades, should Doncic clinch the scoring title without an All-NBA selection, he would join a rare group of scoring champions to miss out on this recognition. Lakers coach JJ Redick noted the substantial impact of Doncic’s performance on the team, creating uncertainty regarding their playoff prospects.
