Jarrod Wallace has set the stage for his boxing debut against Nelson Asofa-Solomona, attributing his release from the Melbourne Storm to “flaws” noted by coach Craig Bellamy. The two former NRL forwards will clash on the undercard of Tim Tszyu’s heavyweight bout against Denis Nurja on Easter Sunday.

While Wallace steps into the ring for the first time professionally, Asofa-Solomona seeks to continue his winning momentum following a knockout victory over Jeremy Latimore earlier this year. Tensions between the fighters have escalated in recent interviews, culminating in a heated media presence just before the fight.

Wallace expressed his motivation for fighting Asofa-Solomona, calling into question the Kiwi enforcer’s abilities. “We’re front-rowers, we don’t take a backward step,” he stated, acknowledging his opponent’s strength while also highlighting perceived deficiencies, suggesting those flaws contributed to Asofa-Solomona’s departure from the Storm. “I’m going to take him into deep waters and throw bombs. Don’t discount me,” he warned, pointing out that Asofa-Solomona’s confident persona may be deceptive.

In the official press conference, Asofa-Solomona initially refrained from responding, offering a curt “no comment” when pressed about Wallace’s remarks. However, he later admitted to being taken aback by the former NRL star’s comments. “It threw me off guard, but it was something I couldn’t really reply to—there’s too much collateral damage,” Asofa-Solomona remarked, acknowledging the cleverness of Wallace’s jab.

Having left the final year of his Storm contract for full-time boxing, Asofa-Solomona has since entered into an extended agreement with No Limit promoters. Meanwhile, Wallace has transitioned, having played for clubs including the Broncos, Titans, and Dolphins before concluding his career with Catalans in 2024.

As the fight approaches, the anticipation builds not only for the match itself but also for the off-the-ring banter that has unfolded between the two athletes. Their contrasting trajectories and the drama of their exchanges set the atmosphere for what promises to be an entertaining clash in the ring.
