This Easter, shoppers should brace for higher prices on festive treats, with recent data from Compare the Market indicating an average increase of around 10 per cent compared to 2024. The comparison website analysed the cost of a basket of 15 popular Easter items, including chocolate bunnies, eggs, seafood, hot cross buns, and soft drinks, revealing that the overall cost for this selection has risen by $18.60, making the total $211.30, up from $192.70 last year.
Significant price hikes have been noted for various treats: the iconic 200g Lindt Easter Gold Bunny has surged by $4 (28.5 per cent), while Cadbury bunnies are up $2 (20 per cent). Other items have also seen increases, such as the Humpty chocolate egg, now $1.50 (18 per cent) more expensive, and brioche fruit hot cross buns, which have risen by 80 cents (16 per cent). The only items that maintained their prices were the Darrell Lea Easter Bilby and Woolworths’ Easter Mini Dessert Selection, with no products becoming cheaper.
Sarah Orr from Compare the Market highlighted the frustrations parents may feel over the increased costs of Easter goodies amidst broader price pressures. She noted that a small increase on each item can accumulate significantly by the time shoppers reach the checkout. In March, typical Australian families were spending about $212 weekly on groceries, reflecting a 11 per cent increase compared to last year.
Amid rising costs, Orr encouraged consumers to search for better-value products. She suggested looking for home brands or lesser-known labels, which can offer delicious alternatives without the hefty price tag. Taking the time to compare unit prices, indicated in smaller print on products, can help shoppers make smarter purchases.
Additionally, consumers may benefit from discounts available through various service providers. Some insurance companies, energy retailers, and even roadside assistance programs offer shopping discounts that could help ease the pressure of the rising Easter costs. Shoppers are urged to uncover these potential perks to enjoy a more affordable Easter without compromising on enjoyment.
