Sydney experienced an unusually hot morning in March, with temperatures soaring to over 28 degrees Celsius even before sunrise. Today’s forecast projects a record high of 37 degrees, making it the hottest capital city in Australia.
The western suburbs, particularly Penrith and Campbelltown, are expected to endure the highest temperatures, while the Sydney CBD will also confront mid to high 30s. A heatwave warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for all metropolitan Sydney, with conditions extending to areas like Broken Hill and Albury.
Earlier in the day, Kiama, situated on the south coast, recorded the highest temperatures in NSW at 32 degrees shortly after 8 am. This intense heat is anticipated to persist until midnight, with expectations of a cooling change by tomorrow. Senior meteorologist Magda Gallos-Lorenc expressed optimism that today will mark the peak of the heatwave.
The extreme weather has led to a total fire ban across greater Sydney, central ranges, southern slopes, and southern regions. The Rural Fire Service has alerted residents in high-risk areas to activate their survival plans due to the risk of dry winds exacerbating any fires. Additionally, NSW Ambulance has urged Sydneysiders to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, typically around 1 pm, advising individuals to remain hydrated and limit outdoor activities.
