A towering seven-metre golden statue of Donald Trump has been erected at his golf course, Trump National Doral, in Miami. This eye-catching bronze sculpture, adorned with gold leaf, portrays Trump with his fist raised triumphantly, echoing a well-known photograph taken shortly after a 2024 assassination attempt on him.
The statue, financed by the cryptocurrency group known as $PATRIOT, has stirred some controversy. Sculptor Alan Cottrill, who created the piece, is currently in a legal dispute with the group over their marketing of the statue in connection with their memecoin, which Cottrill disputes. The cryptocurrency company secured the statue for approximately AUD 500,000. Despite the artwork’s presence at a Trump property, the Trump family has stated they are not affiliated with $PATRIOT. Eric Trump specifically clarified in February that the Trump Organisation has no ties to the cryptocurrency venture, expressing gratitude for the support but emphasising their non-involvement.
Doral is one of Trump’s preferred golfing venues, having visited the venue multiple times recently. He is scheduled for another visit coinciding with the PGA Tour’s Cadillac Championship and is also expected to attend the G20 summit in December.
In a separate announcement, the U.S. State Department revealed plans to feature Trump’s likeness on a limited edition of passports, commemorating America’s 250th anniversary in July. These special passports will include unique artistic designs whilst upholding the robust security measures familiar to standard U.S. passports. Importantly, the Trump-faced passport will be issued as the default at the Washington Passport Agency, compelling those who wish to avoid it to apply for alternatives online or visit another city.
