Under scrutiny, the number “86” is identified in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as slang for “to throw out” or “to kill,” an interpretation the Department of Justice has endorsed in the context of this case.
While Comey has stated that he intended no harmful implication and has argued against the interpretation of his post, the allegations against him stand firm.
