An extensive $820 million upgrade of Sydney’s public transport system is in progress, aimed at improving reliability and user experience for millions of daily commuters. The significant enhancement of the Opal card system includes the introduction of a new app and digital card. There will also be automatic fare adjustments if incorrect fares are charged, alongside the installation of information screens on 5,000 buses.

The Opal card, in use for 13 years and inspired by London’s Oyster card, now sees the implementation of modern technology that is long overdue. Commuters can continue using their cards, credit cards, or smartphones for tapping on and off, alongside new capabilities to facilitate savings on fares.

Additionally, event attendees will now have the convenience of scanning QR codes on their tickets at Opal readers for complimentary travel. Starting next year, the first of 25,000 new readers will be installed, with the project timeline extending to completion by 2028.

Transport Minister John Graham has highlighted that this initiative represents a fundamental improvement for users within the public transport network. The changes also promise enhanced real-time tracking, aiming to eliminate the frustrations caused by “ghost buses,” which are services that are listed on apps but fail to arrive. Transport Secretary Josh Murray explained that the new system will provide precise bus locations, tally passenger numbers, and determine the most crowded services, ensuring that commuters are better informed about when to expect buses.

This overhaul signifies a pivotal moment for public transport in Sydney, promising a more efficient and user-friendly experience for all.
