Job losses are increasing in the tech sector; however, some of Australia’s most profitable companies are still recognised as the top workplaces for career advancement. LinkedIn recently released a list highlighting 20 companies that offer the best prospects for professional growth, even amidst ongoing layoffs that have impacted many in the industry.
The top companies for 2026 were identified based on extensive data on hiring trends, promotions, skill development, and employee retention metrics across millions of professionals. Notably, over 78,000 tech workers worldwide have lost their jobs since the beginning of the year, with approximately 4,450 positions gone in Australia, primarily affecting cities like Sydney.
In this challenging environment, Commonwealth Bank stands out, having been named the leading company for career development. This accolade arrives even as the bank faces plans to cut hundreds of roles, including an upcoming 300 redundancies linked to its AI initiatives, which has drawn criticism from the sector’s union over concerns of service reductions.
Commonwealth Bank’s Chief People Officer, Kiersten Robinson, celebrated the recognition, attributing it to the positive culture fostered by its employees. She noted that this achievement reflects the bank’s commitment to offering an environment where staff can develop new skills and progress in their careers.
In addition to Commonwealth Bank, other leading companies in this ranking include Telstra, Canva, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Oracle, all of which were placed within the top ten. Telstra has also indicated that it may eliminate several jobs as it integrates AI capabilities and reallocates some roles overseas.
Despite the uncertainty within the tech industry, Australians remain focused on growth and learning opportunities when considering employment options. Data suggests that 90% of Chief People Officers anticipate a shift towards organising work based on skill sets rather than conventional job titles.
As the landscape continues to evolve, marked by both challenges and opportunities, companies that prioritise professional development and create supportive workplace cultures are expected to emerge as preferred employers in the future.
