Michael Ennis, the former assistant coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons, recently expressed his feelings regarding his unexpected dismissal from the club. Following a brief stint that began in September, Ennis was informed by interim coach Dean Young that he would be affected by the significant changes being implemented after the firing of coach Shane Flanagan.
Ennis shared a close friendship with Flanagan, who led the Cronulla Sharks to an NRL premiership in 2016 while Ennis was a player. Reflecting on his departure, he described the week as “difficult” and highlighted the emotional strain it caused him, particularly concerning his relationship with Flanagan. Despite the disappointment of losing his coaching role, Ennis acknowledged the necessity of change given the club’s poor performance.
While he respected Young for his communication regarding the situation, Ennis expressed admiration for the talented individuals still working within the Dragons, noting that despite the lack of favourable results recently, the club boasts a promising future.
The Dragons are set to face the Sydney Roosters on Anzac Day, marking their first game after Flanagan’s exit. There were speculations leading up to this point that the club might delay Flanagan’s removal to preserve the integrity of this significant match. Following Ennis’s departure, Young wasted no time in reshaping the team, benching Kyle Flanagan and promoting Kade Reed for his debut.
Ennis acknowledged the differences in coaching style between Flanagan and Young, and he also praised Young for his experience and familiarity with the players. He expressed positive anticipation for the remainder of the season, wishing Young and the team success as they navigate through this transitional phase. Ennis concluded with a message of goodwill for the club, emphasising his hope that they can turn their fortunes around under Young’s leadership.
