Charlotte MacInnes, a rising star, is suing actor Rebel Wilson for defamation, alleging that Wilson’s social media posts misrepresented her actions and harmed her reputation. The controversy arises from claims that MacInnes had lodged a sexual harassment complaint but later withdrew it for career advancement.

MacInnes stars in Wilson’s musical comedy The Deb, set in rural New South Wales, which Wilson co-directed and produced. The legal dispute escalated after an incident involving Amanda Ghost, the film’s co-producer, who experienced a medical event at Bondi Beach in September 2023. Following the incident, MacInnes assisted Ghost back to their shared apartment, and they endeavoured to warm up by sharing a bath. Although Wilson has suggested that MacInnes expressed discomfort regarding the bathing arrangement, MacInnes disputes this assertion and insists no complaint was made.

MacInnes claims Wilson’s portrayal of her actions, suggesting that she retracted her complaint for personal gain, has severely tarnished her character. During her testimony in the Federal Court, she became emotional, indicating that Wilson’s allegations have caused her significant distress.

In court, MacInnes expressed feeling mocked by a recent Instagram story shared by Wilson’s wife, Ramona Agruma. The story featured a character from Finding Nemo, supposedly alluding to MacInnes’ testimony about her inability to recall details from four years of travel. MacInnes’s barrister interpreted the post as an affront to her client’s credibility and suggested it warranted aggravated damages.

Both Wilson and Agruma are expected to provide evidence in the ongoing trial. Ghost also testified, describing her support for MacInnes during her audition process for The Deb, while MacInnes conveyed her concern over how the allegations could jeopardise their professional relationship.

MacInnes stated that her reputation has suffered due to insinuations that she is untrustworthy and prioritises her career over her colleagues. Her barrister has described Wilson’s claims as malignant, asserting that they suggest MacInnes traded allegations of harassment for professional gains.

Wilson, however, denies the defamatory nature of the posts, arguing that MacInnes’s career remains unaffected and that the critical issue is whether MacInnes made a complaint and later retracted it. Wilson’s legal team maintains that she altered her narrative to facilitate her own career advancement.

The case highlights the complexities surrounding allegations of harassment and the impact of social media on personal reputation, especially in the high-stakes environment of the entertainment industry.
