In south-east Queensland, large yellow structures have recently been erected at various intersections, catching the attention of local residents. These units, identified by Transport and Main Roads Queensland as “innovative flood tuff units,” are designed to protect essential road infrastructure as Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches landfall.

As the cyclone nears, the region is preparing for potential impacts. The flood tuff units aim to safeguard electrical cabinets responsible for managing traffic signals, road lighting, and speed controls from inundation, with the capacity to withstand floodwaters up to five metres deep. This protective measure ensures that traffic operations can continue and communities remain connected even during severe weather events.

Authorities have highlighted that these units play a crucial role in the cyclone response and recovery plans, emphasising the importance of keeping them in place for the safety of all road users. Amid preparations for the cyclone’s expected landfall, which is forecast to occur tomorrow morning, residents are being urged to stay vigilant.

As of now, Tropical Cyclone Alfred is situated approximately 145 kilometres east-southeast of Brisbane, moving steadily towards the south-east coast. Currently classified as a category 2 storm, Alfred is anticipated to cross over the Moreton Bay Islands before making landfall, likely between Noosa and Beenleigh later in the day. The cyclone is bringing significant wind gusts of up to 140 km/h, along with heavy rainfall and unusually high tides, raising concerns over possible flash flooding.

Evacuation orders are already in place for areas affected by Alfred, with over 33,000 properties in south-east Queensland and about 35,000 in northern New South Wales experiencing power outages this morning. Residents are urged to remain prepared and heed safety warnings as the cyclone approaches the region.
