Wayne Bennett, the coach of South Sydney Rabbitohs, has voiced his bewilderment regarding the hip drop tackle ruling following Jye Gray’s incident during the Rabbitohs’ match against the Sharks. Midway through the second half, Gray tackled Siosifa Talakai, landing on the Sharks player’s legs, which prompted commentators, including Mick Ennis, to suggest that Gray might face scrutiny for his actions.

After the tackle, Talakai was forced to leave the field and did not return, while Gray now awaits a decision from the match review committee regarding his tackle. In a press conference, Bennett candidly admitted, “I saw it. I’m not sure I know what a hip drop is, to be honest.” He expressed his genuine confusion about the rule, acknowledging the complexities surrounding it.

Sharks’ coach, Craig Fitzgibbon, remarked that hip drop tackles are typically unintentional and described the situation as “unfortunate.” Meanwhile, Sharks captain Craig McInnes stood by Gray, arguing that due to Talakai’s formidable strength, defenders often find themselves at a disadvantage. He explained that a defender in such situations faces a dilemma: letting go of the tackle could result in the attacker continuing their run, which would be equally problematic.

This incident has sparked discussions about the clarity of the rules governing tackles in rugby league, with both coaches highlighting the inherent challenges faced by players. As the Rabbitohs and the Sharks reflect on the game, the debate on the understanding and enforcement of the hip drop rule continues among players, officials, and fans alike.
