Concerns regarding a potentially severe flu season in South Australia have prompted calls for free vaccinations for all. Currently, the National Immunisation Program only provides free flu shots to specific vulnerable groups, such as young children, seniors over 65, and pregnant women.
Health officials assert that the existing program offers adequate protection, yet State Opposition Leader Vincent Tarzia has expressed fears that flu cases this winter could surpass those of the past five years. He remarked, “It looks like it’s going to be one of the worst flu seasons on record.”
The Pharmacy Guild has joined the call for a statewide free vaccination initiative ahead of winter, highlighting the dual pressures on the healthcare system and households. Opposition health spokesperson Ashton Hurn noted that offering free vaccines could save families approximately $100. Matthew Gillespie from the Pharmacy Guild emphasised the need for everyone to get vaccinated to prepare for the flu season.
Previously, South Australia ran a free vaccination program in 2022 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but health authorities believe that this year’s approach should remain focused on the most vulnerable populations. Chief Health Officer Nicola Spurrier stated that a targeted vaccination strategy is more effective from a public health standpoint.
