A recent report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reveals that health conditions accounted for 20 per cent of all deaths in Australia, equating to 38,273 fatalities. The report highlights the complexity of determining causes of death, with multiple factors contributing to four out of every five deaths, as explained by spokesperson Michelle Gourley.

Coronary heart disease was the leading cause, followed closely by dementia (18.3%), high blood pressure (12.5%), cerebrovascular diseases (11.5%), and diabetes (11.4%). Direct causes included lower respiratory infections (8%), cardiac or respiratory arrest (7%), and sepsis (6%).

Importantly, the AIHW report examined all conditions listed on death certificates, not just the primary causes. Gourley explained that while coronary heart disease might be noted as the underlying reason for death, other contributing factors, such as hypertension or diabetes, can also play significant roles.

This comprehensive approach aims to improve our understanding of the various health conditions impacting the Australian population. It serves as a crucial tool for informing healthcare strategies aimed at enhancing quality of life and guiding health services in developing effective interventions to address the major health threats facing communities across the nation.
