Two children are unaccounted for following a destructive house fire in Bowen Mountain, located north-west of Sydney, where the roof of a two-storey residence collapsed. The fire, believed to have ignited around 2am, resulted in five occupants escaping from the building before the roof caved in, prompting firefighters to employ defensive tactics rather than engage directly with the flames.
The New South Wales Rural Fire Service deployed approximately 50 personnel and 12 fire engines to tackle the fierce blaze, which presented significant challenges for the teams on the ground. Commissioner Trent Curtin stated that conditions forced responders to retreat temporarily, as parts of the structure showed signs of imminent collapse, making it too perilous for them to enter the home immediately.
As daylight broke, an urgent search for the missing children commenced, though their ages remain undisclosed. It took around two hours for the fire to be contained, during which the firefighters were able to reassess the situation and gain access to some sections of the property, which remained extremely hot and smouldering. Commissioner Curtin emphasised the courage and skill of the firefighters, who managed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent homes; they are now being offered support as they cope with the challenging situation.
Investigators have initiated a probe to determine the cause of the fire, as the community grapples with the potential loss of the two children. The incident has prompted an outpouring of concern and support in the local area as authorities work to locate the missing youngsters.
