A significant earthquake has hit the northern coast of Japan, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for the region. The tremor, which registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, occurred offshore from Sanriku at approximately 4:53 PM local time (5:53 PM AEST), with the seismic activity being recorded at a depth of around 10 kilometres beneath the ocean’s surface. Reports from Japan’s NHK public television suggest that the area could face a tsunami with waves reaching heights of up to 3 metres in the near future.
