A significant earthquake has hit the northern coast of Japan, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for the region. The tremor, which registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, occurred offshore from Sanriku at approximately 4:53 PM local time (5:53 PM AEST), with the seismic activity being recorded at a depth of around 10 kilometres beneath the ocean’s surface.
