A tragic incident occurred on Easter Sunday at South West Rocks, north of Port Macquarie, resulting in the death of nine-year-old Kaison Greaves, affectionately known as Kai. His family expressed their profound grief, stating that their “hearts are broken” following the accident. Kai was reportedly on holiday in New South Wales with his family from Queensland when he became trapped between rocks around 3:30 PM.

Described as “larger than life” by his father, David Greaves, Kai was a spirited boy who loved adventure, was strong-willed, and had a knack for making others laugh. His father shared that Kai had an infectious cheeky grin and was a wonderful big brother. In a poignant remark, Kai’s sibling noted the rain and suggested it was because “the angels are crying for Kaison.”

The incident is being investigated, and initial reports suggest that Kai was playing when the accident occurred. Inspector Peter Walton characterised the event as a “tragic misadventure.” Despite the swift response from NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, and Surf Life Saving NSW, rescuers faced challenges, as they were reportedly in neck-deep water attempting to release him from the rocks. Unfortunately, Kai was declared dead at the scene.

The weekend was notably grim for ocean safety, marked as the worst Easter on record for drownings, highlighting the risks swimmers and beachgoers face. The community has rallied around the family during this difficult time, and a friend has set up a fundraising page to assist them in the wake of their loss.
