The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has announced that The Star casino’s licence will remain suspended until at least the end of September. Nick Weeks, appointed by the NICC, will continue to manage all operations at the casino throughout this period. The decision follows findings that highlighted serious leadership and cultural issues within The Star, which is currently in a remediation process to address these concerns.

Weeks’ oversight was initially set to conclude on March 31, but the NICC sought additional submissions from both him and The Star pertaining to the casino’s eligibility for a renewal of its licence. NICC Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford remarked that these submissions indicated positive strides in The Star’s remediation journey. However, challenges regarding the casino’s financial stability have hampered progress, leading Crawford to determine that the licence suspension should persist.

Trading of The Star’s shares was halted in February, reflecting the growing uncertainties surrounding the casino’s operations. Crawford expressed optimism regarding the company’s efforts, stating that while progress is welcome, the coming six months will be crucial. During this time, The Star must demonstrate further advancement in its remediation initiatives and work towards financial stabilisation.

Under Weeks’ continued supervision, The Star will be permitted to operate its gaming facilities. Nonetheless, the NICC has made it clear that significant improvements are necessary for any thoughts of reinstating the casino’s licence. The work done in the near future will be pivotal in determining the casino’s future viability in New South Wales.
