The Sydney Roosters are facing a significant reduction in talent as they head into the new season, following the departures of key players. However, one promising prospect stands out: 20-year-old rookie centre Robert Toia. Despite struggling with injuries early in his career, Toia has long been recognised as a top talent. Having made the move to the Roosters as a teenager and representing Queensland at the U19s State of Origin, he is now poised to make his NRL debut due to the absence of regular centres Joseph Manu and Joseph Suaalii.
Teammate Connor Watson has expressed confidence in Toia’s potential, stating that his experience in first-grade matches will only enhance his development. Last season, Toia impressed in reserve grade, scoring four tries in six matches, and is not alone in competing for a first-grade spot, as other young talents also vie for selection.
Club legend Anthony Minichiello believes the infusion of youth is a positive step, highlighting that the team will benefit from fresh recruits if they can remain injury-free. While Minichiello remains hopeful about the Roosters’ chances, he anticipates a year of nurturing new talent rather than immediate title contention, placing them in the top eight but uncertain about a top-four finish. The Roosters’ season opener is scheduled against the Broncos on March 6.
