League legends have praised the NRL’s decision to curb players from exaggerating fouls by lying down after slight contact in defensive play. In recent years, such diving has escalated, often resulting in referees disallowing legitimate tries due to defenders feigning injuries, much to the frustration of coaches, fans, and players alike.

Starting in 2025, the NRL will empower referees to exercise more discretion in these situations, aiming to reduce the incidence of players seeking unwarranted penalties. Legendary player Brad Fittler commended the NRL’s approach, noting that it grants referees the flexibility they need to make informed decisions. He argued that the trend of players faking injuries has become detrimental to the game, impacting defensive strategies.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart expressed a straightforward view on the reforms, emphasising the need for players to defend honestly rather than opting for the easy way out. While some officials, like Redcliffe’s Bob Jones, questioned the ability of referees to discern genuine injuries from feigned ones, he acknowledged the necessity of taking action against this ongoing issue.

Additionally, Fittler highlighted the NRL’s initiative to enforce stricter rules on play-the-ball. He lamented the lack of effort from players in this aspect and believes these changes will encourage a more rigorous approach.

Overall, the NRL’s upcoming reforms are a proactive step towards ensuring fairer play and maintaining the integrity of the sport.
