Recent insights reveal the top regional locations in Australia that city dwellers are flocking to in pursuit of an enhanced lifestyle. According to the Regional Movers Index (RMI), released by the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) in partnership with the Commonwealth Bank, Geelong, Victoria, has emerged as the most desirable destination for this demographic in the year leading up to March, with a substantial 9.3% of net internal migration directed towards the area. This marks an impressive shift, displacing the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, which previously held the top position with an 8.9% share.
The latest index highlights a significant migration trend, as an increasing number of individuals are leaving metropolitan regions for the allure of regional living. Over the past quarter, a noteworthy 11% surge in migration to regional areas has been recorded, signalling a 20% increase compared to migration rates prior to the pandemic.
RAI CEO Liz Ritchie commented on the findings, noting the ongoing fascination Australians have with regional life. She pointed out that there’s been a 25% rise in people moving from capitals to regions versus those moving in the opposite direction, with net migration now sitting at 40% higher than pre-pandemic figures. This trend underscores the growing appeal of regional areas, particularly in Victoria.
Additionally, Geelong’s prominence aligns with a broader trend of increased interest in regional Victoria, as it garnered 34% of total net migration into all regional areas during the March quarter, an increase from 28% the year before.
As Australian cities become crowded, the desire for space, scenic environments, and a relaxed lifestyle appears to be driving a long-term shift towards regional living. The RMI’s findings reflect a broader societal change, confirming that more Australians are considering their quality of life and opting for the tranquillity and charm of regional towns and cities.
