A 17-year-old teenager, who cannot be named due to legal restrictions, is facing serious allegations in Queensland, including involvement in a fatal crash that resulted in the death of 76-year-old Allan Smillie. This individual is also accused of attempting to invade the home of a legally blind resident in Logan Reserve. Security footage reportedly captured the moment the teen crashed into the blind man’s house in December, prompting a chase by the resident and his neighbour.
The victim expressed feeling intimidated and unsettled by the incident, stating that he is now fearful of leaving his home and is plagued by anxiety over every noise at night. He voiced his disgust upon learning that the same individual responsible for the attempted home invasion is also linked to Smillie’s tragic death. Following the crash, the teenager is facing multiple charges, including operating a vehicle without a licence during the collision that killed Smillie, who was riding his mobility scooter at the time.
In a letter addressed to Youth Justice Minister Laura Gerber, the victim urged the Queensland government to provide greater support and funding to police services to prevent such crimes. He believes that increased police presence in the area could deter such incidents, highlighting the need for more proactive measures in community safety.
Meanwhile, police in Logan are currently investigating a string of recent break-ins, assessing whether they can be connected to the same youth. The teenager already has nine prior charges relating to property crimes along with seven charges associated with the fatal accident. Smillie is being remembered fondly by family as a “gentle, caring and kind” person, leaving behind a community in shock over the events that transpired.
