Sydney Swans player Caiden Cleary has received a two-match suspension from the AFL due to an illicit drugs charge. The 19-year-old was apprehended by NSW Police in December while attempting to purchase drugs at a venue in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Complicating matters, Cleary failed to inform the Swans of the incident, which only came to light recently.
He was issued a notice for possession but avoided a criminal conviction by paying a $400 fine. The AFL found Cleary guilty of “conduct unbecoming,” resulting in an adverse finding under its illicit drugs policy and a suspended fine of $5,000.
AFL general counsel Stephen Meade emphasised the importance of player education regarding the risks associated with illegal substances, underlining their responsibility to their clubs and the community. The Swans expressed disappointment over Cleary’s actions but noted his remorse and full cooperation with the investigation.
As a consequence of the suspension, Cleary will miss the Swans’ opening match against Hawthorn and their clash with the Lions, along with the Community Series match against the Suns. Following his selection as a first-round pick in the 2023 draft, he made five appearances last season and was aiming for a regular position in the team.
