The Queensland state cabinet has approved plans for a new stadium at Victoria Park in Brisbane as part of the preparations for the 2032 Olympic Games, while discontinuing several other significant projects. Premier David Crisafulli is expected to disclose that more events will take place in regional Queensland, addressing concerns regarding the focus on the new stadium in the south-east. However, some sports federations have expressed dissatisfaction with the confirmed regional venues.
Crisafulli emphasised the importance of creating infrastructure that will benefit future generations, as well as ensuring a successful event during the Olympics. The new stadium will be a central feature of an Olympic precinct, which is expected to include a National Aquatic Centre and an athletes’ village near the Brisbane Showgrounds. However, challenges remain regarding funding from the federal government, particularly as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese seeks a $2.5 billion investment for the Brisbane Live Arena, which is intended to replace the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
Though there have been effective negotiations on funding, sources indicate that plans for a 12,000-seat indoor sports centre have been scrapped in favour of utilising funds for alternative venues. Crisafulli acknowledged the complexity of negotiations, jokingly referring to the discussions as a typical debate between two Italians that could be resolved over a shared cannoli.
As the Queensland government navigates these challenges, they had hoped the funding discussions might proceed during the federal election, which could have shifted the balance of power between Albanese and his opposition counterpart, Peter Dutton. However, delays caused by Cyclone Alfred have complicated these negotiations.
Compounding these issues, sports leaders have expressed concerns about the suitability of some proposed venues. Rowing Australia has highlighted that the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton—a potential site for rowing events—has not yet been technically assessed by the International Olympic Committee or World Rowing, raising doubts about its readiness. While the presence of river crocodiles has been lightheartedly noted, it remains an issue that could concern international participants.
The governance of sports events is also under scrutiny. Hockey officials are worried about using temporary facilities at Ballymore instead of a more permanent option on the Gold Coast, although sources confirm that the Gold Coast remains a leading candidate. Along with these considerations, basketball finals may be scheduled at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, while sailing events could be held between the Whitsundays and Townsville.
Amid regional dissatisfaction regarding the emphasis on a new stadium in the south-east, Crisafulli and other ministers plan to embark on a tour of Queensland to promote the upcoming Olympics and engage with communities across the state.
