A tourist submarine, accommodating 45 guests and five crew members, tragically sank off the coast of Hurghada in Egypt’s Red Sea, resulting in the deaths of six Russian nationals. The incident occurred approximately 1,000 metres from the shore, with the exact cause of the sinking yet to be determined.

Emergency services promptly rescued the remaining tourists, though over half sustained injuries and were taken to local hospitals. Condolences were expressed as the Russian consul confirmed that among the deceased were two children. While the initial reports indicated that all passengers were Russian, the Egyptian governor later noted that the group included individuals from India, Norway, and Sweden.

The popular tourist destination of Hurghada is renowned for its coral reefs, attracting divers and holidaymakers alike. The ill-fated submarine, known as the Sindbad, typically offered 40-minute underwater excursions, descending up to 25 metres to showcase marine life through its panoramic windows.

Rescue operations unfolded swiftly, with the governor, Major-General Amr Hanafi, visiting survivors in the hospital. Reports reflected a mix of anxiety and relief, with a number of tourists expressing gratitude for their survival amidst the chaos. However, some passengers, like an Indian man, voiced concern for relatives still undergoing medical treatment.

This incident marks a concerning chapter for Egypt’s tourism sector, which is critical to its economy. Previous maritime accidents in the region have raised alarms about safety protocols, prompting some tour operators to reconsider their activities in the Red Sea.

As investigations into the tragedy continue, the focus remains on supporting the affected families and ensuring the safety of the remaining tourists.
