Sir Michael Hill, the esteemed founder of the global jewellery brand Michael Hill, has passed away at the age of 86. Originally from New Zealand, Hill established his company which successfully expanded into Australia and Canada, boasting over 170 stores across various Australian shopping centres.
Hill’s death was confirmed in a statement from Michael Hill International. The company described him as a revered jeweller, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and devoted family man, highlighting his accomplishments and the impact he had on the jewellery industry. Interestingly, Hill’s earliest ambition was to become a concert violinist, but after being told at the age of 17 that he had started too late to excel in music, he shifted his focus to jewellery. He began his career in his uncle’s store in New Zealand, where a job quickly blossomed into a passionate pursuit.
Recognised for his innate storytelling ability and keen merchandising sense, Hill attracted customers with his unique selling approach. He was awarded for his innovative window displays and transformed advertising methods within the industry with his bold campaigns.
Sir Michael Hill leaves behind his wife, Lady Christine, along with their two children and grandchildren, marking the end of an era for a brand that has touched many lives and reshaped the retail landscape in jewellery.
