Authorities are investigating a serious accident that occurred overnight in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, resulting in significant injuries to a man. The incident took place at approximately 11.50 pm on Friday when a silver Holden Barina veered off the Princes Freeway in Drouin, near Francis Avenue, and rolled down an embankment.
The vehicle’s driver, a 48-year-old man, found himself trapped inside the car, which subsequently caught fire. Fortunately, a police officer and a vigilant member of the public were able to reach the scene, where they bravely rescued the man from the flames.
Emergency services swiftly transported the driver to a hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries sustained in the crash. Eyewitness accounts indicate that just prior to the accident, the Holden was seen driving alongside another vehicle in Drouin’s central business district.
Detectives are keen to speak with the driver of this second vehicle as part of their investigation into the events leading up to the crash. They are working diligently to piece together the details surrounding the incident.
