A surge of seismic activity near Greece’s popular tourist island of Santorini has raised alarms, with scientists recording thousands of minor earthquakes over the past fortnight. The University of Athens’ crisis management committee indicated that while the majority of these quakes are of low magnitude, the possibility of a significant earthquake cannot be dismissed. Authorities have declared a state of emergency, evacuating many residents and visitors, and deploying rescue teams equipped with drones and trained dogs. Schools in Santorini and nearby islands are closed for the week, and additional medical personnel are on standby at local hospitals.

As of now, approximately 12,000 earthquakes, mostly minor, have been detected since January 26, including 109 on Monday alone. The largest recorded, measuring 5.2, occurred recently, with authorities cautioning that the sustained tremors might signal an impending larger quake. Experts have intensified monitoring efforts, deploying extra surveying equipment to assess the situation. Santorini, known for its stunning scenery and historical volcanic activity, is experiencing an unprecedented and prolonged earthquake swarm, a rarity for the region.
