South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has publicly acknowledged that he is the officer under investigation for an accidental firearm discharge during a drug raid in 1991. This revelation comes after a recent media report highlighted the incident, prompting an internal review within the police force.

The event occurred when Stevens, then a 28-year-old member of the Elizabeth Criminal Investigation Branch, accidentally fired his gun while attempting to gain entry during the operation. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and the incident was already subject to an internal inquiry at that time.

In addressing the resurgence of this matter after three decades, Stevens expressed uncertainty about the reasons behind its resurfacing. He remarked, “I can’t comment on the motivations for whoever relayed this incident to a journalist, but it is what it is.” He reaffirmed that the incident does not detract from his current responsibilities as Commissioner and mentioned that he has never tried to avoid discussing it.

Typically, the identity of officers involved in such investigations remains confidential; however, Stevens chose to reveal his identity to prevent casting suspicion on other senior officers. Despite the controversy, the South Australian government has voiced unwavering support for him, with cabinet minister Nick Champion stating, “We have 100 per cent faith in the police commissioner; we back him 100 per cent.”

Stevens’ decision to come forward illustrates his commitment to transparency within the police force while reflecting the challenges of accountability and public scrutiny faced by high-ranking officials.
