Premier David Crisafulli has committed to providing urgent assistance to flood-impacted communities in North Queensland, where residents are grappling with empty grocery shelves. He highlighted the immediate need for restocking local supermarkets, with multiple flights delivering essential supplies to Cairns, including refrigerated goods. The government is collaborating with retailers to ensure access to non-perishable items, encouraging locals to support small businesses like IGA.

Currently, 22 schools remain closed due to ongoing power outages in the most affected areas, but efforts are underway to facilitate the return of students to classes. Crisafulli emphasised that while the recovery will be a significant challenge, the community’s resilience is paramount, and support will not be withdrawn.

In response to the devastating floods, Emergency Management Minister Jenny McAllister announced hardship payments for impacted households, including disaster recovery payment options for regions like Cardwell and Hinchinbrook. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Townsville to assess the situation and reiterated the government’s support, announcing 13 weeks of income assistance for affected areas and the deployment of ADF helicopters for essential supply deliveries.

The federal government is focused on rebuilding infrastructure to withstand future floods, with a temporary bridge being constructed to restore transportation routes. The community’s needs remain high, as residents face continued threats of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding.
