Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old German backpacker, has shared her recovery journey following her harrowing experience of being lost in the Western Australian outback for 12 days. In a recent social media post, she revealed that she lost an alarming 12 kilograms during her ordeal in the Wheatbelt region, located over 300 kilometres north-east of Perth.

In a heartfelt message alongside a photo of herself in hospital, surrounded by gifts and food, she expressed her need to regain the lost weight. “When you need to gain 12 kilograms back,” was her caption as she sat amidst a bountiful array of baked goodies, snacks, and a bouquet of flowers. In another post, she thanked the German consulate for their thoughtful gifts.

Earlier, Wilga reflected on her ordeal through a statement released via the Western Australia Police. Grateful for her survival, she thanked everyone who supported her during her distressing experience, particularly highlighting the prompt actions of her rescuer, Tania Henley. Wilga acknowledged that she was only able to survive due to the overwhelming encouragement she received: “I am certain that I survived only thanks to this incredible outpouring of support,” she stated, expressing her admiration for the kindness shown to her in Australia.

Wilga was found on the site of her earlier crash, which had left her confused after hitting her head. She was discovered by Henley about 24 kilometres from the accident site, described as “thin and fragile.” Upon being rescued, an emotional Wilga was seen tearing up, indicating the gravity of her experience.

During her time lost, Wilga managed to survive on rainwater from puddles and slept in caves, navigating her way west in hopes of finding assistance. After walking approximately 14 kilometres, she was physically depleted, dehydrated, and suffering from mosquito bites, as well as a foot injury by the time she was located.

Now recovering at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth, Carolina is praised for her resilience and will surely look to regain her strength with the heartfelt help she has received. Her remarkable story not only sheds light on her courage but also highlights the compassion of those around her during such a dire situation.
