A 17-year-old has been charged with multiple offences, including drug-related and driving violations, following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 76-year-old man on a mobility scooter in Kingston, a suburb south of Brisbane. The crash occurred on Saturday morning when the teenager reportedly failed to stop at a traffic sign, leading to a collision with a Holden Barina and subsequently striking the elderly man.
Prior to police arrival, members of the public successfully restrained the teenager at the crash site. Officers apprehended him and later revealed that he faced several charges. These include dangerous driving causing death while under the influence of an intoxicating substance, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, unlicensed driving, and possession of illegal drugs. Authorities also discovered cannabis, unprescribed medication, and two stolen credit cards in his possession.
The elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the Barina sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, it has been reported that two passengers in the teenager’s vehicle fled the scene on foot.
In connection with earlier incidents in the Logan area, the boy has been charged with nine additional property-related offences, which further complicates his legal situation. He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Beenleigh Children’s Court.
An unnamed 16-year-old girl present during the incident has not been charged but is cooperating with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.
