One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and former Prime Minister Tony Abbott have reaffirmed their support for Ben Roberts-Smith following his arrest at Sydney Airport. The highly decorated soldier was detained by Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Officer of Special Investigations (OSI) officers after arriving on a flight from Brisbane. He is facing serious allegations, with expected charges including five counts of war crimes related to the deaths of five Afghan nationals between 2009 and 2012, as confirmed by AFP Commissioner Kristy Barrett.
In light of the arrest, Hanson took to social media, expressing her unwavering support for Roberts-Smith and highlighting the need for the Australian public’s backing for him and his family during this challenging time. She described his arrest as disgraceful, particularly as it took place in front of his twin daughters, and raised concerns regarding his treatment in custody. Hanson noted that he could potentially be held for an extended period while awaiting a bail hearing, which further fuels her outrage.
Abbott also voiced his support for the former special forces soldier, extending what he termed “instinctive sympathy” towards soldiers involved in the Afghanistan conflict. He questioned the timing of the Roberts-Smith investigation and whether any alleged misconduct was appropriately addressed by military superiors during and after his service. Abbott contested the idea of judging a soldier’s actions in combat by civilian standards, arguing that justice must be expeditious and that prolonged investigations can feel like a punishment in themselves.
