Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has committed to maintaining the Whyalla steelworks rescue package if he wins the upcoming election, provided the $1.9 billion fund is not allocated for hydrogen energy projects, which he labelled a “hoax product.” This promise was made during a meeting in Adelaide focused on South Australia’s future, where the Sovereign Steel package, initiated in response to Sanjeev Gupta’s steelworks entering administration, was officially signed. Dutton confirmed that the package will remain intact regardless of any change in government.

Dutton also clarified that under his leadership, the Coalition would not pursue any ongoing equity stake in the steelworks, differing from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who hasn’t made a similar declaration. Meanwhile, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas noted he had observed indications of Dutton’s commitment but had yet to review them in detail. While the recent funding announcement provides some relief to the local workforce, residents in Whyalla emphasise that a considerable journey lies ahead, emphasising the urgency of securing a new owner for the facility.
