New South Wales (NSW) Police are opposing a planned march by pro-Palestine protesters across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, citing concerns for public safety. As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensifies, with aid organisations stating that recent assistance measures are inadequate, the Palestine Action Group seeks to demonstrate across the popular landmark to raise awareness and advocate for action.

The group has submitted a request for permission to march with an expected turnout of 10,000 participants this Sunday. However, Acting Deputy Commissioner of NSW Police, Peter McKenna, has announced that the police will not facilitate the protest and indicated they may pursue legal action to prevent it if necessary. He emphasised that the decision is rooted in public safety concerns.

McKenna referenced past large-scale events, highlighting that substantial planning is required—citing the Sydney Marathon, which takes around ten months to prepare. He noted that shutting down the bridge, a crucial thoroughfare for emergency services and daily commuters, could lead to significant disruptions.

In response, Josh Lees, a spokesperson for the Palestine Action Group, expressed determination to proceed with their plans, stating that the group is willing to contest any police injunction in court. While they hope for an amicable resolution, Lees affirmed their commitment to the protest.

McKenna acknowledged that while the police have previously supported more than 100 protests and facilitated alternative routes, the focus must remain on public safety. He expressed understanding for the protesters’ sentiments regarding international issues but insisted that the safety of the public and police remains the paramount concern.

The outcome of this dispute will likely shape the nature of protest activities in the region, particularly in relation to large gatherings aimed at raising awareness on pressing global issues.
