The era of noisy cars and motorcycles disturbing suburban streets may soon come to an end, following a trial of noise detection cameras that have captured hundreds of violations. In New South Wales, drivers can face fines up to $1200 for operating a vehicle exceeding noise limits by 15 decibels or more when stationary. Lesser offences incur fines of $150 to $500, depending on the noise level.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has installed three noise detection cameras, with two located in Bayside, an area reporting persistent disturbances from loud vehicles. Since their December installation, the cameras have documented 1,000 noisy incidents, with nearly half attributed to repeat offenders. According to the EPA, 180 vehicles accounted for 434 distinct noise violations.

The cameras are triggered by excessive noise, activating both microphones and number plate recognition systems. The trial will progress with further tests conducted by engineers at the UTS sound lab, seeking to ensure the cameras can effectively differentiate between loud vehicles and other sounds. The trial is set to conclude in December, after which the government will determine whether to implement fines for excessive noise driving.
