The AFL’s announcement to delay two of its four Opening Round matches due to Cyclone Alfred has resulted in a condensed schedule for the weekend, with Sydney set to play a pivotal role in launching the season.

Kicking off on Friday night, the previous grand finalists will seek redemption following their defeat to Brisbane. They will face a promising Hawthorn team, which emerged as a major surprise under the leadership of club legend Sam Mitchell during 2024.

Following this, another significant contest will unfold on Sunday when Greater Western Sydney (GWS) takes on Collingwood at Engie Stadium in Western Sydney. While Sydney is considered the favourite to secure a victory in front of their home fans at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), analysts from Nine’s footy community anticipate that Collingwood may execute a thrilling upset against the Giants.

In terms of predictions from Nine’s panel, former players and analysts are divided. Nathan Brown and Rory Sloane both back Sydney and Collingwood for wins, while Tom Morris opts for Sydney and GWS. Eddie McGuire shows faith in Hawthorn and Collingwood’s abilities, contrasting with Alicia Loxley who also backs Sydney and Collingwood. Tom Steinfort supports Sydney alongside GWS, while Tony Jones agrees with McGuire’s selections. Nat Yoannidis follows the crowd with his predictions for Sydney and Collingwood, whereas Clint Stanaway picks Sydney and GWS.

As anticipation builds, fans keenly await these opening matches, which promise to set the tone for the season ahead.
