The newly constructed Rozelle Interchange in Sydney has become a hotspot for speeding violations, with four speed cameras in the tunnels capturing 15,834 offences in just the first four months of the year. This alarming number has resulted in a significant financial impact, with the state government collecting nearly $5.94 million from these fines.
Peter Khoury, the media representative for NRMA, highlighted the need for increased awareness among drivers in this new area, emphasising the importance of adhering to speed limits. The speed camera overseeing traffic in the southbound tunnel, which connects the Iron Cove Bridge to the M8 Motorway, operates within a 60 km/h zone. Currently, it remains in a “warning mode,” issuing fines only to those exceeding the limit by over 30 km/h.
However, due to rising concerns regarding speeding incidents, authorities have decided to tighten this 30 km/h buffer zone. As a result, 4,791 drivers have received penalties for speeding. Officials have noted that this adjustment appears to be effective, leading to a reduction in speeding violations.
Overall, the Rozelle Interchange stands as a significant source of revenue for the state while highlighting ongoing road safety challenges.
