Christopher Pyne, the retired federal MP and former Liberal defence minister, has recently undergone heart bypass surgery. Fortunately, the condition was diagnosed early, allowing for timely intervention, which took place last week in Adelaide.

At 57, Pyne expressed gratitude for modern medical advancements, stating, “I am lucky to live in a time when a procedure like this is routine, and where I can gain a renovated new heart.” He reflected on his family’s health history, noting that his father, Remington, was not as fortunate; he passed away from the same disease at the age of 59 in 1988. Pyne remains optimistic about his recovery, asserting, “In a few weeks I will be right as rain.”

A spokesperson for Pyne confirmed that although the surgery is significant, he was lucky to have the necessity for it identified early, and he is expected to make a full recovery in the coming weeks.

Pyne began his political journey as the federal MP for Sturt in 1993, gaining the position at just 25 years of age and maintaining it throughout his lengthy career. His notable tenure included roles as defence minister and leader of the house under former Prime Minister Scott Morrison from 2018 until 2019. He also handled various portfolios, including education and training, industry innovation and science, and ageing.

After retiring from politics in 2019 following 26 years of service, Pyne took on the role of industry professor at the University of South Australia. Currently, he serves as the chairman of Pyne and Partners, Vision 2020 Australia, and NIOA, in addition to numerous other executive positions.
