Nationals Leader Matt Canavan has unveiled a bold economic initiative he describes as an “Australia on steroids” plan, advocating for significant changes to foster growth and development in the country. Addressing the National Press Club, Canavan stated he envisions an economic revolution rather than merely a reset.
His proposal, termed the “Patriot Agenda for an Australian Economic Revival,” encompasses a six-point strategy. Key elements of this agenda include:
1. Abandoning the 2030 net-zero emissions target to pave the way for investment in diverse energy sources, including nuclear.
2. Implementing strict immigration controls to reduce mass migration.
3. Promoting a surge in birth rates to foster population growth.
4. Establishing new cities to accommodate this increased population.
5. Protecting domestic manufacturing and crucial industries through various measures, including tariffs.
6. Initiating a national infrastructure programme aimed at building spaceports, dams, roads, and railways.
Canavan’s strategy highlights the need to move away from the existing net-zero target, which he opposes, advocating instead for the potential of nuclear power. He underscores the importance of a robust domestic space industry, noting Australia’s solitary orbital launch last year in stark contrast to New Zealand’s 50 launches, stressing the space sector’s growing significance for communications, defence, and national security.
Moreover, Canavan envisions that constructing new cities in regional areas, alongside promoting flexible work options, could entice individuals away from major urban centres, facilitating homeownership and subsequently encouraging family growth. He posited that with secure housing options, families might be more inclined to have children.
Despite his comprehensive vision for economic reinvigoration, Canavan did not provide specific details on funding these ambitious projects, while concurrently criticising the current Labor government’s policies for neglecting these pressing issues. In conclusion, he asserted, “We just need more of this country. Everything that is wrong with the country can be fixed by what is right.”
Canavan’s proposals aim to ignite discussion on Australia’s future direction, striving to bolster the economy through a combination of population growth, infrastructure development, and energy reform.
