A concerned father from Melbourne, Abraham Khoury, has revealed that an alleged paedophile, Joshua Brown, was employed at his daughter’s childcare facility, Milestones Early Learning Centre, in Greensborough last December. Frustratingly, the childcare centre has not yet been included in the official list of sites under police investigation. Khoury expressed his outrage over the lack of transparency from the centre, stating that parents were not informed about Brown’s presence.

Khoury discovered Brown’s image through a communication app used by the childcare and noted with dismay that he had been sitting beside his daughter. “To know that he was there, and we were all kept in the dark about it, is infuriating,” Khoury said, emphasising feelings of betrayal and concern for his child’s wellbeing. As a precaution, Khoury stated he needs to have his daughter tested for sexually transmitted diseases.

Attempts to reach the Milestones Early Learning Centre, which is managed by the Affinity group, have not produced any response. Khoury stated, “It’s not good enough,” as he continues to seek answers.

Meanwhile, police are in the process of investigating Brown’s employment history and reviewing materials from various childcare centres across the state. Victorian Police Minister Anthony Carbines acknowledged the importance of community feedback in this ongoing case and encouraged more individuals to come forward.

In response to these troubling events, some childcare operators have proposed measures such as prohibiting male staff from changing nappies, reflecting a knee-jerk reaction to the incident. However, industry experts caution that any changes need careful consideration and should be implemented on a national scale to effectively enhance safety in all childcare facilities.

Nesha Hutchinson, the vice president of the Australian Childcare Alliance, highlighted the necessity for reforms, including improved oversight mechanisms like surveillance cameras, to ensure the protection of children and peace of mind for educators. Khoury echoed these sentiments, calling for substantial changes, stating that existing safety measures are currently insufficient.

The unfolding situation has raised significant alarm among parents and childcare professionals alike, underscoring the pressing need for reforms and improved safety standards within childcare services in Australia.
